Public Information

Who We Are

Members involved in Public Information (PI) of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) help carry the message of recovery to the still suffering alcoholic. Working together, we do this by informing the general public about AA by providing resources such as literature,  discussion and educational materials. We also can provide Public Service Announcements to radio and television stations.

Imagine someone wanting help but they don’t know who to call. Imagine someone helping a friend get sober but not knowing where to turn for information. Now imagine all the people who are in recovery today because they did have a phone number, or a pamphlet with the right piece of information that helped them find their way into recovery. That’s what PI does, and that’s how we can help.

What We Do

Public Information carries the message by getting in touch with the media, schools, industry, and other organizations, and relaying the nature and purpose of A.A. and what it can and can’t do for alcoholics. Some examples of PI work include:

  • Public service announcements in public media
  • Posters on community bulletin boards in businesses
  • AA pamphlets and posters in medical clinics and doctors’ offices
  • Distributions of AA books in libraries
  • Distribution of business cards with law enforcement officers
  • A resource to the Guidance Counsellors of the Public School system in HRM
  • A resource to Senior Citizen facilities
  • A resource Universities, business schools, public schools, employee assistance programs
  • In cooperation with the CPC (Cooperation with the Professional Community) Committee take part in AA presentations

AA Members Getting Involved

Come join us to carry the message of Alcoholics Anonymous to the alcoholic who still suffers. How can a suffering alcoholic know we live in their community, have a program of recovery and will welcome them with open arms without judgement? While we practice personal anonymity; the fellowship, the organization is not anonymous. Finding ways to come to the attention of the suffering alcoholic, that is our work.

The work of the Committee is in two parts. The first is the leg work. There is a need for people to put up the posters, to take the pamphlets to various sites, to make phone calls and to take part in the presentations. This may take anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days a month.  The second part is the monthly Committee meetings. While this is serious work, it is done in a light-hearted manner. They are brainstorming sessions. We problem-solve and come up with new ideas for carrying the message. We manage to do it within an hour or so.
